Privacy Policy

The VerbCorner Project is an academic research project engaged in determining the structure of language, meaning, and thought. This project is powered by volunteers: Specifically, we collect linguistic judgments from volunteers, as well as some demographic information (age, language background, etc.), which we used to help analyze the data.

The VerbCorner Project is committed to respecting and protecting personal privacy. We are also committed to "Citizen Science," in which teams of amateur researchers work together to solve real scientific problems. This interaction necessarily involves some amount of sharing of information with other users (comments on forums are linked to your user name, for instance). Users who do not wish to expose any personal information should use anonymous usernames (that is, not your actual name) and not provide personal information in the forums.

Personal Information

The VerbCorner Project collects several types of personal information. Importantly, however, we do not ask for any identifying information such as your name, address, or IP address. Registered users are asked to provide email addresses. These email addresses will never be published for any reason. We do not sell or rent your personal information to anyone. We may share your personal information with third parties for purposes of performing services on your behalf (see "third party vendors," below).

Usage Data

When you browse, read or download information on our website, we only collect limited, anonymous data. For instance, the third-party vendor Google Analytics may record the numerical Internet Protocol (IP) address of the computer you are using; information about your browser and operating system; date and time of access; and the internet address and page which linked (referred) you to our site. If you search the site, your search requests may be logged. We use this information to measure the number of visitors to different sections of the site, diagnose and correct system errors, perform research, and improve the usability of the site

Third-Party Vendors

VerbCorner Project makes limited use of third-party vendors in order to improve the user experience and facilitate our research. We use Google Analytics to keep track of website usage (how many users visit how many pages how often, etc.) in order to better understand how users interact with the website and in order to improve the experience. Google Analytics keeps track of you through your IP address. None of the information you submit to us is shared with Google Analytics. You can read their privacy poliy at (http://www.google.com/analytics/learn/privacy.html).

The VerbCorner Project also maintains a forum so that users may interact with one another and with us. This forum is administered by Moot.it. We share your username (so that the forum can say which comments were left by which user) and your email address, if one is on file (so that Moot.it may update you when someone replies to one of your posts). Your actual comments on the forum are also necessarily shared with Moot.it. No other information is shared with Moot.it. You can read their privacy policy here.

Cookies

Some pages may make use of cookies. Cookies are a mechanism by which a web server and a web browser can jointly “remember” information within or between browsing sessions. We use cookies to improve the user experience within the context of a single browser session, primarily allow you to reload a form you have already partialy filled out. Cookies may contain a “key,” so that you do not need to login every time you visit a new page. Remember, if you are using a public computer, and you fail to log out or quit the browser after you finish your session, another person may be able to access this information.

Links to Independent Websites

VerbCorner Project pages may link to independently-run web sites outside of the gameswithwords.org domain. We are not responsible for the privacy practices or content of such web sites.

Disclosure Required by Law

If we receive a warrant or subpoena for user information, we may disclose requested records to law enforcement authorities or outside parties seeking information through the legal process. In the event that we are required by law (including a court order) to disclose the information you submit, we will provide you with notice (unless we are prohibited) that a request for your information has been made so that you may object to the disclosure. If you have provided an email address, we will send that information by email. We prefer to independently object to over-broad requests for access to information about users of our site, but we cannot assure you that we will be able to do this in all cases. If you do not challenge the disclosure request yourself, we may be legally required to turn over your information.

Children’s Privacy

The VerbCorner Project is intended for adults and we will not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 years old. If you are a parent or legal guardian of a child under age 13 who you believe has submitted personal information, please contact us immediately.
